What is Phool Dei?

Phool Dei (फूल देई) is a beautiful spring festival celebrated in Uttarakhand, typically in the month of Chaitra (March-April). The festival celebrates the arrival of spring when wildflowers bloom across the Himalayan hillsides.

The Tradition

Young girls go from door to door, placing flower petals on the thresholds of each home. As they place the flowers, they sing the traditional Phool Dei song:

"Phool Dei, Chhamma Dei, Deni Dwaar, Bhaar Bhaar, Yo Dei ko Baarambaar Namaskaar"

(O Flower Dei, O Beautiful Dei, bless this doorstep abundantly, we bow to this Dei again and again)

Preparations

Gathering Flowers

Children collect wildflowers from meadows and hillsides, including:

• Buransh (Rhododendron) — the state flower
• Fyonli (wild flowers)
• Marigolds
• Various wild blossoms

Making the Dei

Dei is a special sweet dish made from:

1. Jaggery (gur)
2. White flour (maida)
3. Ghee

This is prepared by households and given to the visiting children as a reward.
