Chopta & Tungnath: Guide to the Mini Switzerland of India
Chopta is a pristine alpine meadow and the gateway to Tungnath — the highest Shiva temple in the world. Plan your perfect Himalayan trek.
About Chopta
Chopta is a small region of meadows and evergreen forest in the Rudraprayag district of Garhwal. Often called the "Mini Switzerland of India", Chopta sits at an altitude of 2,680 meters and serves as the base for the trek to Tungnath and Chandrashila Peak.
Tungnath Temple
Tungnath (तुंगनाथ) is the highest Shiva temple in the world at 3,680 meters. It is one of the Panch Kedar — five sacred Shiva temples in the Garhwal Himalayas.
The Legend
After the Kurukshetra war, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva's forgiveness. Shiva, avoiding them, dove into the earth. His arms appeared at Tungnath (hence "Lord of the Peaks").
The 1,000-year-old Tungnath temple is a testament to the devotion and architectural skill of ancient Himalayan builders. Standing at nearly 3,700m, it has survived centuries of extreme weather.
